Meet Dr. Robert Chen
In 1993, Dr. Chen graduated with honors (Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society) from the Johns Hopkins University, with a major in bioengineering (BS). Since orthodontic treatments involve a lot interaction between biomechanical therapy and biology, Dr. Chen’s bioengineering background gives him unique and special insights in the design of orthodontic treatments. His research focus at Johns Hopkins was on bioinstrumentation, modeling of the heart arrhythmias, and the timing of defibrillation. His work was published in a national journal.
After Johns Hopkins, Dr. Chen went on to the University of Pennsylvania, an internationally renowned Ivy League school, to obtain his Doctorate of Dental Medicine (DMD). While going through the rigorous four-year dental program, Dr. Chen also conducted research that led to publication and presentation in national meetings. He was involved in a number of orthodontic research projects with the orthodontic residents at the university. Graduating as one of the top students in his dental class and an inductee into the OKU dental honor society in 1997, he went on to the orthodontic residency program at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).
Like Johns Hopkins and University of Pennsylvania, the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) is a world-renowned institution for the training of excellent clinicians. During his three years of orthodontic training at UCSF, Dr. Chen studied under the tutelage of many renowned orthodontists. Combining his education with his bioengineering background, he was able to design orthodontic treatment strategies that were very effective and minimized patients’ discomfort. Dr. Chen’s orthodontic research interests focused on using hand X-rays to evaluate children’s growth status and various biomechanical designs of orthodontic treatment. In 2000, he received his orthodontic certification and master’s degree in oral biology from University of California, San Francisco.
That same year, Dr. Chen became a certified Invisalign® provider. He is very knowledgeable about Invisalign treatment. Dr. Chen runs orthodontic workshop/seminars on a regular basis to share with the local dental community about the latest advances in orthodontics, and how orthodontic treatment can bring tremendous changes to patients’ smiles. He is a certified California State Dental Continuing Education provider.
We strive to provide excellent orthodontic care with the least amount of discomfort and disruption to patients’ daily activities. Dr. Chen is committed to learning the most advanced orthodontic techniques. One of his passions is to invent, study, design, and innovate orthodontic biomechanical strategies to achieve clinical excellence and efficiency. He has made numerous presentations to local dental study clubs on innovative biomechanical treatment using orthodontic microimplants.
